Yuba City, CA – Patients at Sutter Surgical Hospital – North Valley (SSH-NV) are in for a real treat! On Saturday, July 4, Sutter Surgical Hospital began using locally grown, seasonal fruits and vegetables in its menu. The produce comes from farmers in the Central Valley who use sustainable organic farming methods.
“Sustainable farmers use natural methods to control insects and grow crops. We don’t use any synthetic or genetically modified insecticides or fungicides that can contaminate food and pollute the soil or water,” says Dan Silva, owner of Silva Orchards and the general manager of the Yuba City Farmers’ Market. “The idea is to sustain or protect the environment so we can continue to grow healthy food free of dangerous chemicals for years to come.”
Because the produce is grown locally, it’s also fresher and healthier than what you typically find at the grocery store, adds Silva. “We sell locally and only have to drive a few miles to deliver our produce, which means we can harvest a crop at the height of its ripeness when it has the most flavor and nutrients. The produce sold in grocery stores is often picked before it is ripe and may travel hundreds of miles and sit around for days before you buy it.”
